It is little known that King Sporty releases spanned almost three decades. From the early 70s reggae and soul 7”s, Noel Williams moved on to boogie, disco and electro 12” in the 80s and by the mid-90s, the rise of house music also influenced his productions. Computer Age is from the latter, last period. A rare return by Konduko, mixing doses of electro with 4/4 syncopated rhythms more readily associated with new global growth of electronic dance.
After the success of the early 80s, Williams had kept up producing, releasing consistently on Konduko as it took on board the new genres of hip hop and electro, as well as presiding and predicting a founding role in Miami Bass. Computer Age – coming in Club and Dub mixes – takes those elements; breakbeat, 4/4 kick, vocoder vocals and boogaloo effects, to present a look at the future, a song about and titled that sees the birth and take-over of the personal computer of today.
There is an added warmth though, the lazy break beat, Chicago style bass and hats, underlying mellow string stabs, all allowing the vocoder the space to perfectly extol a space-age future – ‘This is the sound of age’ – retaining electro’s futuristic outlook. This is highlighted further in the Dub Mix, with ‘Whistle Song’ bass and key stabs, plus a high note to ride the rhythm.
It's fitting then to pass the remix over to one of the East Coast’s finest production teams, in Philadelphia’s DJ and production crew, Universal Cave. Running parties, as well as their own label, the collective of Brian Cassidy, Shawn Ryan and Ryan Todd are no strangers to the label, providing a fantastic remake of Noel Williams’ Music Street (ERC109) back in 2019.
Always popular with discernable DJs, this time they provide a rolling, bumping remake that the original remade as a live jam, giving their Discomix added swing and pure uniqueness. A real stand remix in a series of great remixes, the synchronisation of the production team is apparent in the warmth and understated depth of their reversion, looping, dubbing and re-arranging for clubs today – the perfect update for the real Computer Age.
